Tinariwen, the musical heroes from Mali, gave me the idea to get the swing and rhythm of hand clapping. As a former Techno producer I was used to find rhythm in drum machines. Think of Hi hats or cymbals. But if you listen to a show of Tinariwen you will notice it has the same repetitive flow as Techno, even though there’s no drummer involved. No drummer on stage also means no Hi hats nor cymbals, yet their show swings like crazy. This is because two people are constantly clapping, during the whole show they are the rhythmic spine of the set. This gives such an enormous natural rhythmical vibe which you feel in your entire body. And it makes sense, after all, there are only two instruments that we as humans all share: our voice and our hands.
